Common Questions
Everything you need to know about our céilí dance socials, tin whistle workshops, sea shanties, and folk jam sessions
Not at all—our céilí socials are designed for absolute beginners through to experienced dancers. We start each evening with a walk-through of the sets, and our caller guides you through every step. Most people pick up the basic formations within 20 minutes, and you'll be dancing confidently by the end of the night.
Our workshops give you hands-on feedback on your technique, breath control, and finger placement—things that are hard to correct from a video. You'll also learn ornamentation and styling that brings traditional jigs and reels to life. Plus, playing alongside other musicians helps you develop timing and confidence in a supportive group setting.
You're exactly who these events are for. Sea shanties are meant to be sung together, and there's no audition or performance pressure—just good voices and great company. We teach the verses and choruses as we go, and the repetition helps it stick.
We host folk jams twice a month, and yes, you can drop in anytime. They're informal gatherings where acoustic musicians play traditional Irish tunes together. If you play an instrument, bring it along; if you just want to listen and soak in the atmosphere, that's brilliant too.
We're built for the 40-60 crowd, and that's genuinely who shows up. You'll find a mix of people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s—some lifelong traditional music enthusiasts, others trying it for the first time. Everyone's here for the same reason: they want to learn, dance, sing, and connect with others who care about Irish culture.
For tin whistle workshops, we have beginner whistles available, so you don't need to buy one before your first session. For folk jam nights, bring your own instrument if you play, but you're welcome to come without one and just enjoy the music. For céilí and sea shanties, you don't need anything except yourself.
